ITU takes lead in enhancing security and confidence in ICT

What: Cybersecurity: Building confidence and security in ICT

Why: The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) entrusted ITU to take the lead role in coordinating international efforts on cybersecurity, as the sole Facilitator of WSIS Action Line C5: "Building confidence and security in the use of ICT".
Managing cyber-threats: Can we stay ahead of the attacker?
Cyber-attacks: Are we ready for the battlefield of the 21st Century?
Civilian cyber-defense: Is enough being done to raise security awareness and to protect users?
Global Challenges require Global Solutions: Are there any in the pipeline?
Who is doing what in Cybersecurity?
How far are we towards meeting the goals of the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS): Building confidence and security in the use of ICT?
Who: World renowned cybersecurity experts from governments, international organizations, industry and civil society discuss current and emerging cyber-threats and solutions.
The High-level Experts' Group (HLEG) of the Global Cybersecurity Agenda (GCA), meeting for the second time since October 2007 in the presence of the ITU Secretary-General, will present the progress achieved in the elaboration of global strategies to curb cybercrime and other cryberthreats.
The meeting on 21 May is closed to the Press, but interviews and meetings can be arranged through the ITU Press Office.
WSIS Facilitation meeting on Cybersecurity: Building confidence and security in ICT, 21-23 May
The meetings are open. Discussions, presentations and debates will take place on the legal, technical and organizational aspects of cybersecurity as well as capacity building and international cooperation.
22 May: Interactive multi-stakeholder panels on current and emerging threats and solutions. Debate and exchange of views will centre on current and emerging cybersecurity issues and solutions.
23 May: Presentations on initiatives followed by discussions on identifying possible goals and targets as well as mechanisms for measuring performance and evaluating progress.
The meetings will be held in conjunction with a cluster of events, 13-23 May, aimed at the facilitation and implementation of WSIS goals. These events are organized around World Telecommunication and Information Society Day, 17 May 2008, which marks the founding of ITU in 1865.
