LG Electronics is poised to join the increasingly crowded online apps store market. By Ian Scales.
According to Reuters, the Korean handset giant (currently the world number 3 mobile handset vendor) will make an announcement tomorrow.
It is believed the LG offering will focus on Asia and will be set up to better support multiple languages.
The store, called "LG Application Store" will start off with 1,400 applications and will have 100 free programs, available in 15 languages. Both the iPhone and Android Market stores are very strong on free apps.
The store will be open to Asia-Pacific countries such as Singapore, Malaysia and Australia first and will be extended to Europe and the South America by the end of the year. There are no plans to launch in the US where iPhone and RIM are strong. LG says it will have more 2,000 apps by year’s end.
