Tesco Mobile experienced a record growth of new subscribers on Christmas Day. The joint venture between Tesco and O2 hit a milestone of 2.5 million customers on the 25th December.

The MVNO was inundated with tens of thousands of consumers flocking to activate their new handsets, with the iPhone 4 being the most popular Christmas gift.

According to the company, Tesco Mobile grew both its Pay As You Go (PAYG) and contract base in every quarter of 2010, despite a highly competitive mobile market.

“Tesco Mobile is well on its way to becoming the number one MVNO in the UK, said Lance Batchelor, chief executive of Tesco Mobile and Tesco Telecoms.

"It is continuing to grow its Pay as you go and Pay Monthly base in a declining market space which highlights the network’s appeal to our mobile savvy nation."

The only UK operator to offer the iPhone 4 on a 12-month contract, Tesco Mobile grew its customer numbers by 25 per cent last year and saw the network move into the contract market with the launch of one-year contracts as well as 24-month options.

The MVNO has gone from strength to strength, partly fuelled by the roll out of Tesco Phone Shops - including the launch of its first standalone Phone Shop in Bristol. There are now nearly 200 Phone Shops across the UK providing a range of Tesco Mobile phones, mobiles for other major networks, accessories, broadband services, landlines, top up and Tesco international calling card.

Tesco Phone Shops are also present in international markets including Slovakia, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Turkey and South Korea.
