The network infrastructure companies are all suffering because they're invisible, says Marcus Weldon, CTO at Alcatel-Lucent. Users see and value the applications; they see and love the gadgets; but the network is just the thing that sometimes doesn't work properly. No wonder the companies that make the kit that makes the network not work properly are unpopular. Marcus tells Martyn Warwick that this has to change if network capacity is to grow 100 times as the experts believe it must. So more money to telcos (so they can afford to invest) along with technology which uses far less energy; and more...

After 15 years of competitive expansion, the telecoms industry is in relative decline as a result of remonopolization. As long as carriers remain vertically integrated and increasingly trend towards a bill and keep settlement system the telecom landscape will not develop rapidly and efficiently amortize highly variable supply and demand. It behooves AlcaLu to show the carriers how to re-orient horizontally.
