I have every sympathy for Nortel's employees and shareholders who have watched aghast as senior management have destroyed value, confidence, jobs and a once truly great company. I was the last person to do a TV interview with Frank Dunn a couple of days before he was sacked and was struck by his arrogance and lack of regard for "the little people" as he called them to my face. Then, like many others within the media and without, was amazed when the Admiral was appointed to take his place. There a was a man who was literally asleep on the job. I attended one press conference where he dozed off during the presentation and had to be woken to answer questions! And since then what? Continual, remorseless decline and a perceived lack of urgency on the part of those charged with trying to preserve the rump of the company. Why on earth, given the mess Nortel is in, is it taking until May before the much-vaunted rescue and recovery package is unveiled? I'd like to believe that Nortel might rise from the ashes and believe me, I'd be happy to write something positive about the company - but what? I'm afraid it's doomed, I hope it isn't but I think it is. And in cases like this it's surely better to wring some wry humour out of the situation, otherwise we all may as well sit down and weep. By the way, I don't have any shares or any other interest in Nortel, but I do have several close friends who worked there. The stuff I know off-the-record would make your hair curl. Martyn Warwick. " Tim, I too was brought up on £.s.d. and like most other people I was very happy with it, not least because it baffled just about everyone else on the planet. And yes, we were ripped off at the changeover. I was working in Manchester at the time and my daily bus fare to the office went up from 4d. to 4p overnight - more than double the cost of the day before and an incredible opportunistic price rise.
