" Few facts: 1) Nokia's previous CEO put all his eggs into Symbian, which after year and a half and more of development had nothing to show. 2) Did not invest nor produce a smartphone ? No answer for Iphone, same as Motorola did under Ed Zander and it almost destroyed them. HUGE MISTAKE ! 3) Bet on low margin strategy in Asia, essentially becoming a low cost commodity product. Having said this, I think Elop and team did the right thing by choosing Microsoft over Android. Reasons: 1) Apple with Iphone has no competition with hardware or software. They are a vertically integrated company. This is not the same for Android space, Samsung, HTC, Motorola etc compete in the Android space essentially on hardware. So what really is differentiating the Android phone manufactures ? Its design. Beating Apple with design is extremely hard. Ultimately, Android phone companies are just hardware manufacturers and Google controls the platform, features and services. There is not going to be enough differentiation between a Motorola Droid or HTC Droid other than design. So the question becomes is this a big factor when you have a design centric customer looking at Android vs Apple ? Apple wins ! Overall I think Elop will be successfull in turning this company around, Nokia's saving grace is its brand value. It will be very painful in the short term but they will come through. Hopefully with Microsoft as a partner they can come up with differentiating apps, services to re-emerge. "
