Carrier IQ has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. It stands accused – ironically enough by Eric Schmidt the chairman of Google, among many others – of using its software embedded in smartphones to spy on users, collect their personal data and to capture every keystroke they make.

Carrier IQ admits that it did initially try to kill the story but denies absolutely that its software is anything but a diagnostic tool for network operators and a benign customer care enabler.

Vodafone's joint venture with Verizon of the US is once again being called into question. UK-headquartered Vodafone has a 45 per cent stake in Verizon Wireless and the US operator contributes some 33 per cent of Vodafone's operating profits. However, since 2005 parent company Verizon Communications has point-blank refused to pay any dividends to its UK partner. Martyn Warwick reports. (1)

In the US, Verizon Wireless has (sort of) responded to the demand by the Federal Communications Commission's that it explain why it suddenly and without warning doubled the fees it applies to the early termination of some smartphone contracts. In a letter to the US telecoms sector watchdog, Verizon maintains that the fees are "fair and reasonable". Not many agree. Martyn Warwick reports. (0)
