The home has a private telephone system which costs the inmates a fortune to use and the codgers reckon Matron gets a kickback... that’s why she’s not keen on mobiles. She’ll have a harder job holding back market forces once offers like the French ‘Free’ arrive in the UK. As the deadline for bids to buy the remaining bits and bobs lying around at the bottom of Nortel's once-packed treasure chest draws near, Microsoft is complaining that because it already owns all of Nortel's patents anyway, Google shouldn't be allowed to take part in the auction - and certainly shouldn't be allowed to buy anything. Martyn Warwick reports. (2)
