Small Cells World Summit 2012, in exclusive partnership with the Small Cell Forum, is the largest small cells event in the telecoms industry. With the largest gathering of small cell international delegates in attendance at the 2011 summit, then known as Femtocells World Summit, the conference and exhibition has been doubled in size to provide the only opportunity for the entire ecosystem to take the pulse of the small cells invasion, identify and take advantage of emerging opportunities.

It’s becoming clearer than ever that WiFi and small cell mobile are set to become a significant and growing part of the mobile estate. Demand for mobile data, especially in hotspots, means that network capacity has to be increased to match. Telcos are already offloading data to WiFi and planning new deployments of both femto/pico cells and carrier-grade WiFi. But while these developments may ease the capacity problem at the air interface, they threaten to disaggregate the backhaul network.

Participants: Prof. Simon Saunders, Chairman, Small Cell Forum; Dave Williams, CTO, Stoke

When it comes to 'over the top' players, the default telco attitude is that they're not only disruptive, but also disreputable and something to be fought against – collectively if necessary. But instead of trying to beat off Internet companies because they threaten ‘telco’ revenues, shouldn’t they now be facing up to the fact that OTT is here to stay? Instead of trying to disrupt and slow the growth of OTT by pushing for an end to Internet neutrality, shouldn’t they be developing their own OTT services?

Participants:  Dr Mike Short, VP Europe, Telefonica/O2; Dean Bubley of Disruptive Analysis; Dario Talmesio is a Principal Analyst with Informa Telecoms & Media.

Matron's Diary, 24th February, 2012. "We're all - me included - off to Barcelona this weekend. Somebody has to keep an eye on them.  This week we've heard about BT getting into claims management (insurance);  NSN says it's not fussed about share but it does like a profit; small cells are where it's at; and of course Barcelona. Transport strike? They'd better not or they'll have me to deal with."

Codgertations is filmed in front of a semi-conscious audience in a home for veteran technology journalists. Inmates Martyn Warwick and Ian Scales cogitate and ruminate on the week's best, worst and most amusing stories under the watchful eye of the home's redoubtable 'Matron'.

Mobile broadband is not just about radio.  As operators pump up the speed at the air interface they need to start paying attention to backhaul to make sure the rest of the network can keep up. And not just backhaul. Small Cells, femtocells, WiFi - the key to all these deployments rests on the availability of fixed broadband, whether it's into the home or out to the WiFi hotspot, the broadband link and its cost and availability becomes key to the mobile business model.
This need is driving new opportunities for fixed players who might partner with mobile operators to provide various sorts of wholesale or managed services. What are some of the options? What new business models might we see in the future?
