Latin America is one of the fastest growing mobile broadband markets in the world. The explosion in 3G enabled mobile device sales, the announcement of spectrum auctions throughout the region, the lack of fixed broadband network coverage and the general need for an increase in mobile connectivity have all led to a sudden rise in mobile broadband subscriptions. By the year 2015 mobile broadband penetration is expected to rise to 40% of the entire Latin American population.* The opportunity for mo

It is becoming clear that now is the time to enter cloud computing; to start experimental offerings and to launch them. If a telco hasn’t already launched services, or is just dabbling in go-to-market services, then it might already be too late.

Some incumbent operators appear to be sticking their heads in the sand when it comes to Fibre to the Home, taking a ‘wait and see’ attitude rather than embracing it with open arms. But as is often the case with new opportunities, the right approach at the beginning is vital if operators are to be successful. Future demand for network capacity will be highly variable depending on how compelling new service offerings are. If the network is to cope, it needs to be flexible. But with the expense of installation of Optical and the additional expense of maintaining existing infrastructure while change is underway, is a complete optical network likely to happen in the near future? And will domestic or enterprise demand be the driving force behind the need for change?

Since the early 1900s Engineers and Technicians have put millions of hours into understanding broadcast technology. The many experts who have contributed to a system so essential to all of our lives deserve the world’s respect, but just as this is widely accepted, broadcasters are having the carpet pulled from under their feet as this knowledge becomes redundant in the new IP world. In a super fast and forced volte-face, broadcasters are now turning to their counterparts in the communications industry, looking for advice, knowledge and understanding in a parallel universe of technological development. It’s time for the Engineers to put away their precious nature, as we host a knowledge sharing panel which can hopefully help the broadcasters to understand the networks.
