Prior to his appointment in October 2011 as Head of Telefonica Digital, Matthew Key was Chairman and CEO of Telefonica O2 Europe. He started his career in telecoms at Vodafone in 1998, before moving to O2 UK as Chief Financial Officer in February 2002. With over 13 years in telecoms, Matthew has overseen numerous innovations within the mobile sector, and was the first CEO to launch the iPhone in Europe.
To mark the tenth anniversary of TelecomTV, we asked Matthew to reflect on the innovations of the past decade, and to look at the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead.
We cover the creation of the MVNO model, the demise of the risk-taking CEOs of the 1990s, the shift in emphasis from voice to data, the mistakes made with 3G performance promises, the reasons operators are still fixated on controlled markets with their data caps and walled gardens, the reality of the spectrum crisis and the growth of wifi.
How will the arrival of LTE change the mobile sector? How do cloud services fit within a service provider’s offerings? Can an existing operator become a viable OTT service provider itself? Has the app game already been lost? Will M2M be a key part of a mobile operator’s strategy? And is broadband really a contributor to economic prosperity and social well-being?
For the answers to all these questions, watch our extended-length interview with Matthew Key.
