After all the speculation the pundits got it wrong. General expectations had been that there might be four or perhaps five bidders in Britain's upcoming auction. In fact there are seven - the usual suspects plus a couple of surprises. Martyn Warwick reports. (1)

The UK's biggest mobile operator Everything Everywhere (or EE as the company's marcom spin doctors now want us to call it) has secured a £350 million loan from the European Investment Bank. The loan has raised eyebrows in the market and blood pressure amongst EE's competitors because the EIB has a reputation for being a soft touch in hard times and routinely provides loans at considerably lower rates than Britain's reviled banks. Puffed-up and parading around like a pouter pigeon on steroids after getting the regulatory nod to be the first telco to bring so-called '4G' to the great British public, Everything Everywhere is using the occasion as a reason to rid itself of a moniker that owed more to hubris than reality. Ofcom, the regulator of UK telecoms and the media has, at last, announced plans for the auction of what it calls "superfast 4G" wireless spectrum. The good news is that the watchdog wants 98 per cent coverage of the entirety of the UK by 2017. The bad news is that the plans will almost inevitably mean price rises for subscribers and probably reduced competition as Britain's big national mobile operators could be whittled down from four to three. Martyn Warwick reports. (2)

T**ting is under threat in Pakistan where the government is banning literally thousands of words on SMS on the grounds that they're naughty. 'Taxi', for instance and 'Athlete's foot'. To utter either of these in the home is enough to attract Matron's attention, but so far even she hasn't thought it necessary to ban them. The codgers talk on rural b*******d, Mark Zu****berg and Cisco's new C***d Index, all of which only look sinister when you asterisk them. T*xi!
