Instagram has found out the hard way that it is foolish to over-exploit its users and mess with their rights after more than 8 million deserted the site in just a month. Seems it was all a "misunderstanding". Martyn Warwick reports. (1)

Like Alan Ladd in the classic western "Shane", John Chambers the CEO of Cisco has had enough of being bullied, threatened and pushed around. In the movie, Shane puts a couple of .45 slugs into the villain Ryker (played by the great Jack Palance). In the corporate America of 2012, the modern Cisco Kid is using legislation, and his company's long pockets, to curb the extortionate antics of "patent infringement" trolls. It is to be hoped the end effect will be the same. Martyn Warwick reports. (2)

As widely predicted, the ACTA copyright treaty was killed by the European Parliament by an overwhelming 478-39 majority this week. But will it reconstitute itself and be 'back', Terminator-style? By Ian Scales. (0)

ACTA may be dead(ish) but the content industries will no doubt continue whacking every piracy mole as it pops up. Trouble is they won't be able to disrupt sideloading. By Ian Scales. (0)

The European Parliament's tortuous committee process saw the International Trade Committee (INTA) vote on Thursday to recommend that the full parliament reject the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (ACTA), bringing the number of committees against it to five. Would someone now put the rotten thing out of its misery? By Ian Scales. (0)

Matron's diary: May 14th, 2012. "This week it's smartphones and cloud services again. Apparently  it's not enough to have the things chirping and tweeting like an aviary at dawn - they have to have their own 'clouds'  so you can watch television on them. The codgers also wonder about France online after Sarkozy; Groupon needing to get over itself; and Canada and the US not seeing i to i.

Codgertations is filmed in front of a semi-conscious audience in a home for veteran technology journalists. Inmates Martyn Warwick and Ian Scales cogitate and ruminate on the week's best, worst and most amusing stories under the watchful eye of the home's redoubtable 'Matron'.

The US authorities have placed their northern neighbour on a "priority watchlist" because, according to them, Canada is not doing enough to "combat" copyright infringement. It's all being couched in militaristic terms because there's yet another war on, dontcha know. By Martyn Warwick. (0)

If you thought the new French president might execute an about-face over Hadopi, think again. If François Hollande follows through on his pre-election promises he'll likely pile even more burdens on French ISPs. By Ian Scales. (0)

It's still too early to be absolutely sure, but the tide seems to be turning against ACTA - the European anti-piracy agreement. But while this particular battle might be on the turn, the long-term copyright wars are far from over. Ian Scales reports. (0)

Matron's Diary, April 11th, 2012. "Got rid of one of them for a few days at least. Warwick claims he was off filming something about the Titanic in Cornwall, so presumably he's going to play an elderly version of Leonardo DiCaprio. This edition of Codgertations also has them discussing BlackBerry/RIM (again!); Groupon getting itself into trouble; and a drunken Canadian getting famous by singing a silly song - just like Queen did."

We've all done it. Drunk and under police custody we suddenly remember every word and note of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody (including the instrumental passages). It happened in Canada, was caught on police camera and ended up on YouTube where it was viewed by millions; and then... EMI asserted copyright and requested a teardown. Patently absurd, yes, but it doesn't end there. By Ian Scales. (0)
