The industry is facing increasing demands for real-time charging, driven by the growth in handset OS markets. A flood of low cost smartphones in Asia, particularly from China, is compounding the situation, together with the growth of data usage through ‘all-you-can-eat’ pricing. However, this problem can become a real opportunity for service providers to move up the value chain and better compete with the OTT threat, if they move away from reliance on their traditional network equipment providers.
