Ian Scales sits down with a couple of london-based experts to get a bead on the state of play with Machine to Machine (M2M). Jeremy Green is a veteran telecoms watcher and currently Principal Analyst in Ovum's Telco Strategy Practice; Matt Hatton is a director at M2M specialist, Machina Research.

The MSTF aims to facilitate global coordination and harmonization in the area of M2M standardization by reaching out to a wide range of participants in the field and using it as a growth-enabler for the M2M industry. According to the wireless analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of cellular network connections worldwide used for M2M communication was 47.7 million in 2008. The company forecasts that the number of M2M connections will grow to 187 million by 2014. From its humble start in 2000, the sector has struggled to gain traction, and indeed interest from a wireless industry quite content to focus on person to person traffic. Now though, as telcos seek out new revenue opportunities and markets, interest in M2M is growing. What are the challenges faced in creating profitable M2M businesses? What are the technical and logistical issues faced? What business models are being adopted, and how are partnerships been forged?
