According to the wireless analyst firm Berg Insight, the number of cellular network connections worldwide used for M2M communication was 47.7 million in 2008. The company forecasts that the number of M2M connections will grow to 187 million by 2014. From its humble start in 2000, the sector has struggled to gain traction, and indeed interest from a wireless industry quite content to focus on person to person traffic. Now though, as telcos seek out new revenue opportunities and markets, interest in M2M is growing. What are the challenges faced in creating profitable M2M businesses? What are the technical and logistical issues faced? What business models are being adopted, and how are partnerships been forged?
