Exclusive Video Feature
Re-edited and remastered video feature, which was originally produced in 2016. This new edition reflects the rapid changes made in the 5G sector to ensure its continued relevance in 2017 and beyond.
Will 5G will an evolution of existing cellular networks, or a revolutionary new design and architecture? The answer is both. The 5G standard is being designed to support a New Radio wireless component and a new Core Network architecture. Yet it will also operate with existing LTE networks and EPCs. This combination of standalone and non-standalone modes – plus the notion of forward compatibility – will lead to the most flexible network design.
As vendors and operators start testing pre-5G equipment and services, and as the first true 5G standardised services come online in the next few years, the existing LTE network will also continue to evolve and remain in use for many years to come.
