Chunghwa Telecom holds Taiwan 5G Alliance – CHT Pilot Team inauguration ceremony

TAIPEI, Taiwan, January 29, 2018 - Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd. (TAIEX: 2412, NYSE: CHT) (“Chunghwa” or “the Company”) today held an inauguration ceremony for its CHT Pilot Team of the Taiwan 5G Alliance.

Under the auspices of the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the Ministry of Transportation and Communications, and the National Communication Commission, Chunghwa, the Department of Industrial Technology of MOEA, the Industrial Technology Research Institute, and the Institute for Information Industry co-founded the “Taiwan 5G Alliance – CHT Pilot Team” to accelerate the development of the 5G industry and related services in Taiwan. Linking together more than 40 corporations and organizations from the government, academia, and research sectors, the Taiwan 5G Alliance - CHT Pilot Team aims to launch pre-commercial 5G networks in 2020 with the vision of building a world-class 5G industry chain in Taiwan that is at the forefront of global development and commercial deployment.

Mr. Yu Cheng, Chairman and CEO of Chunghwa Telecom, stated,

As a leading telecommunication service provider in Taiwan, we have committed ourselves to assisting Taiwan’s public and private sectors to upgrade, transform, and combine diversified ICT capabilities while accelerating the innovative momentum of software and content in Taiwan. During Mobile World Congress 2017, Chunghwa signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Ericsson and Nokia, the world’s leading telecom vendor companies. Leveraging Chunghwa’s in-house R&D capabilities, the company has built up its 5G trial field with collaboration from companies in the chips, end equipment, small cells, edge computing, services platform, information security, and content industries to foster the development of 5G services and to explore business opportunities overseas.

In 2018, the Company will continue to actively participate in the government’s national initiatives, including DIGI +, The Infrastructure Plan, The Asia Silicon Valley Development Plan, smart cities, and IoT. With the company’s network infrastructure and extensive experience in providing ICT services, Chunghwa will help improve industrial competitiveness in Taiwan.
