Bryan Davies explains the need for service providers to undergo a major paradigm shift in order to achieve the full benefits of automation in their 5G deployments
The added complexity of 5G requires significant investments in network automation to avoid increasing operational costs. In fact, some of the opportunities promised by 5G cannot even be realized without it.
Communication service providers have been automating parts of their network for decades, but have ended up with disconnected islands of automation scripts. Contrast this with web scale companies, who have seen great success in closed-loop automation, and the obvious question is: Why have web scale companies succeeded where the telecom industry has failed?
Intrinsic, closed-loop automation requires a fundamental paradigm shift for operators and telecom vendors. And this is the next big challenge for the telecom industry.
