NEC, Red Hat and Intel
NEC has reduced its central processing unit (CPU) power consumption for the user plane function (UPF) in 4G/5G networks by more than 30% in a near-commercial environment. To achieve this, it deployed innovations from the Intel Infrastructure Power Manager (IPM) on Red Hat Openshift, paving the way for further power-consumption savings across the entire 5G network. In this programme, we discuss the role that Intel Xeon Scalable processor telemetry plays in enabling the dynamic control of hardware resources for optimal power consumption in NEC's UPF, and learn how NEC customised the load determination logic for real commercial traffic, incorporating it into the UPF data plane development kit. We also learn about NEC’s latest sustainability and power-saving solutions.
