"The idea is that by using the gateway function you can deliver wireline broadband services from a 5G packet core,” Martin tells Guy Daniels. It’s a level of convergence that’s been a long time coming.
The gateway function, the fruit of collaboration between 3GPP, CableLabs and the Broadband Forum, will enable a single technology stack to manage both fixed and wireless services.
Many benefits can flow from this, claims Martin. It can reduce the number of technologies to be managed and enable network operators who already offer both mobile and fixed broadband to manage their subscribers and their service policies; charging, analytics and so on, from one common set of technologies.
