Athletes weren’t the only ones clocking top speeds at the recent FIS Nordic Ski World Championships in Norway – thanks to a pioneering combination of millimeter wave (mmWave) frequencies and Telia’s 5G network.
In a trial during the event in Trondheim, press photographers using Sony equipment could access a separate radio network that utilized the mmWave band, and which was connected to Telia’s public 5G network.
Located at the top end of 5G spectrum, mmWave frequencies offer higher bandwidth and faster speeds.
By using this network to connect cameras and Sony’s PDT-FP1 portable data transmitter, photographers were able to send hi-res images to cloud services faster, enabling more efficient workflows and quicker publication. In fact, the PDT-FP1’s download and upload capacities hit 5.4 Gbps and over 600 Mbps respectively.
Georg Svendsen, Head of Infrastructure at Telia Norway: “We’ve never seen such a performance from this kind of equipment. These are impressive figures, especially since the test was conducted in Telia’s live 5G network, at a ski stadium with an audience present, rather than in a lab. As far as we know, it’s a world record.”
Mirwais Momand, Connected Business Engineering Office at Sony: “It’s been very rewarding to collaborate with Telia. We’re impressed with the network capacity. We’ve tested similar solutions with other operators, and we believe this is the future way of producing content.”
During the championships, which took place between February 26 and March 9, Telia also delivered a 5G network slice to NRK, enabling the host broadcaster to bring viewers innovative live coverage of every competition.
