BT tackles the problem of Wi-Fi roaming and policy enforcement

BT has been looking at how to make wi-fi more like cellular, particularly in terms of capacity and service. It will allow carriers to access a wi-fi network securely, with correct authentication, and able to connect back into the cellular core. At the moment, there is no resemblance in service when moving from cellular to wi-fi. A similar situation applies to LTE roaming, which BT is trialling today. There is no policy enforcement in wi-fi that can match cellular, and the only way you can make the service look the same is to bring the data back into the core.
