Red Hat views the Edge as an extension of its Open Hybrid Cloud vision

Joe Fernandes, VP Cloud Core Platforms Business Unit, Red Hat

The Red Hat cloud platforms team views the edge as an extension of its Open Hybrid Cloud vision, building on its strategy of providing a consistent application and operating environment through OpenShift to provide the ability to develop an application once and deploy it anywhere. It advocates that Kubernetes on Linux should be at the center of a telco’s next-generation infrastructure, whether that is in the data center, across multiple public clouds or at the edge.

The Cloud Core Platforms business unit is comprised of both Red Hat OpenStack and OpenShift platforms, meaning that the vendor can take the lessons learned on the road to NFV and can apply those lessons to help in the move to containers. This will be more of a journey rather than a sudden change where all workloads switch from virtualized (or even physical) to containerized, environments. Instead, there will be a period where both types of applications, virtualized and containerized, must coexist.
