The headline attraction of Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) for mobile operators and their equipment vendors was to provide another way of building differentiating quality into the cell network to enable construction of low-latency services that users would pay extra for. But observers and network operator adopters are keen to highlight a slightly different imperative: the need for openness. So now it's more often 'edge' computing rather than 'mobile edge' computing and it's being coupled with the concept of third party-controlled cloudlettes, engineered to follow users from one network to the next. Perhaps what we're really talking about here is the development of the 'Portable, Neutral Data Centre'?
