Telcos need to meet the challenge of adding many more devices and services to their networks, and so are responding to this by looking towards cloud technologies and how they can map these into their network infrastructure with SDN and NFV. The big trend now in optical networking is the switch to wavelength routing, creating the ability to route wavelengths across the entire network, which is necessary to create the programmability that is needed in the optical layer. This creates a truly dynamic "layer 0" photonics layer, onto which IP technology can be mapped, with the aim of creating an IP over Optical network.
