Marketing teams love new generations of mobile, as it gives them the opportunity to offer something exciting and new to customers. But in the race to be first to market, is it really worth investing in “5G-ready” equipment now, or is it best to wait for standardisation to be completed? Telecom operators have traditionally benefited from the historically strong reliance on global standards, but just how tightly should 5G be defined, and how much can an operator test and deploy now on LTE networks?
The news that on the eve of MWC 2017, a group of 22 operators and vendors issued a proposal to speed up the standardisation process for 5G, caused major waves throughout the industry. BT was one of them; Telefonica declined to join them. So what was behind their decisions and what would be the implications if the proposal is accepted at the forthcoming 3GPP meeting next week? Find out in TelecomTV’s exclusive video debate.
