Mark Shuttleworth, Founder and CEO, Canonical

Canonical is one of the founding members of the OpenStack community, and its CEO Mark Shuttleworth was once again in attendance at the OpenStack Summit to deliver a keynote presentation. “Success with OpenStack is all about the OPEX,” he told delegates. With the giant public clouds such as AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud all competing for the attention and business, a new private cloud had better be competitive and make sense economically. What’s more, companies have to live with OpenStack in the long term, scaling it, upgrading it, growing it, in order to really get value for their business. He adds that it is important to manage the operating costs of OpenStack and keep private clouds in-line with the costs of public cloud, to enable companies to have a successful multi-cloud strategy. Speaking with TelecomTV, Shuttleworth also discusses the specific requirements of telcos relating to open source deployment, and how these impact the overall direction of the OpenStack community.
