Posten, the Norwegian postal service, uses innovative technologies to ensure that letters and parcels are delivered in a timely manner. That’s important at all times of the year, but especially so around Christmas. To ensure Posten has full control of its digital communication during its busiest time of the year, Telia Norway has installed a private 5G network at Posten’s new terminal in Oslo Logistikkpark Drøbak.
Posten’s private 5G network is tailored to its specific needs and requirements, ensuring optimal performance and enhanced security.
“The advantages of such a facility is that it ensures full availability and capacity for the equipment that Posten is completely dependent on in its operation of the terminal,” says Jon Christian Hillestad, head of enterprise at Telia Norway. “A private 5G network is also the safest form of wireless communication, and offers a completely different level of security, mobility, and performance that you don’t get with – for example – Wi-Fi.”
In addition to the wireless private 5G network, Posten’s terminal in Oslo Logistikkpark Drøbak is connected by two separate fiber cables that support cloud services and communication with the company’s central systems. As a backup in the event of any connection issues, the terminal also has an antenna that it can use to connect to satellite Internet services.
Although it has a 375-year history, Posten aims to use the latest technologies.
“It is exciting to test and use the possibilities that 5G technology has to offer,” says Arne Erik Berntzen, Posten CIO. “When we were going to build a new terminal, we wanted to see if it was possible to base all data communication on the mobile network. It provides secure communication for all our devices – both inside and outside the terminal.”
Providing coverage in a building such as Posten’s new terminal can be difficult, as the demands change depending on what is on the shelves, but Telia’s private 5G network is up to the challenge.
“We are completely dependent on our equipment being connected at all times,” continues Berntzen. “Downtime is costly and stops production. With this solution, we will be connected in the best possible way.”
Telia is a leader in 5G in Norway and has been Posten’s technology partner since the autumn of 2021.
“It is very inspiring to work with a customer like Posten, which challenges us and has ambitions to become even more digital and wireless,” says Hillestad. “Their new terminal is a perfect example of that, and we congratulate them and look forward to gaining experience from the operation of the facility. We believe that many different businesses will benefit from the solutions that Posten has adopted.”
