Mobile operators have long wanted to open up the closed and proprietary radio access network to enable more innovation from a wider selection of vendors. The O-RAN Alliance, with its O-RAN specification, looks like it will deliver this change. The alliance was established just 18 months ago by five leading CSPs and already counts over 100 member companies. It is currently working on creating an edge cloud architecture and hopes to publish its Amber software release in November.
