Value-added services is what NFV and SDN is all about. SDN will lead to a new generation of innovation and service differentiation. As telcos consider the long term planning of their networks, the focus will be on network applications and orchestration, all based on software. Being able to improve network utilisation is one way to reduce a telco's capex, as new hardware doesn't need to be deployed. Software can also be used to improve utilisation of the existing hardware to support a broader range of revenue-generating services, using all the cloud based networks that are beginning to emerge. Another example of value-add is to work with individual network operators to tailor solutions to their specific problems.
