In the long term, the intelligence of the network will move out of dedicated devices and into software, and this also applies to routers. Metaswitch is showcasing several new applications around router offload. One is focused at the edge of data centres, where you have high-powered boundary routers with links into multiple carriers: by offloading the processing of BGP protocol and internal topology functions, a low-cost switching device can be used at the edge of the network. The second involves intelligent aggregation. As a lot of traffic stays local, such as cached video streaming, this can be offloaded from the router.
