As mobile networks evolve, we are seeing increasing use of virtualisation across the C-RAN, together with a move to devolve control from the edge, whilst also investing in more computing resource via MEC. The whole nature of cell topology, which has been in use for over 40 years, is now being re-imagined as we move towards 5G, and advanced techniques such as AI and network slicing will be needed to optimise tomorrow’s mobile networks.
