“There’s talk of us being at ‘peak car’,” Jeremy tells Ian Scales, because the car business is rapidly commoditising, just as PC and smartphone hardware did before it. The smartphone is an open mobile device, stuffed full of software that we carry about with us. The car is increasingly an open mobile device too - except it carries us around. But the end result will be that the primary relationship for the car customer looks like being, eventually, with Google or Apple or another IT company, and this has enormous consequences.
