The GSMA has established the ‘Mobile IoT Initiative’, backed by 26 leading mobile operators, to address the use of Low Power Wide Area (LPWA) solutions in licensed spectrum. It is aiming for a first implementation in early 2016 and full commercial solutions later in the year. The mobile operators realise that LPWA will be a significant driver in the development of IoT, and they are determined to get in on the action. They say they already provide reliable end-to-end IoT platforms and also have unrivalled global network coverage as well as technical and business support to react to a customer’s changing needs. But what realistic chance do licensed cellular operators have as they seek to compete with LPWA alternatives (predicted to have 2.7bn connections by 2022)?
