Why IoT systems can and will have gaping security holes and how the industry should deal with them

One of the big problems with IoT security, Haydn tells Ian Scales, is its typical device lifespan. We assume that our mobile phones will last us about two years and, further, that their security is dynamically updated. IoT devices, on the other hand might last 5, 10, or even 30 years out in the field and in many cases will be stuck with the on-device security measures put in place at their deployment - a real problem with perimeter security, since over a long timescale, it WILL be breached. Clearly a different approach is needed to mitigate the risks and Haydn examines the options.
