There’s always been a battle between closed and open systems. We’re seeing it now with mobile networks, especially in the RAN, but it’s been raging in the handset market for decades now, even - shock - before the iPhone locked up the market. But it’s proved to be something of a fool’s errand for those attempting to open up the mobile operating systems. You’re more likely to find the Holy Grail than succeed with a mass-market open OS. Nokia, Intel, HP, Firefox, Canonical, Jolla… the list is long, and getting longer.
