North American CSP MetTel as placed virtualisation technology in its core network to better serve its enterprise customers. MetTel uses VMware as an NFV platform running virtualised network functions (VNF) by software defined WAN (SD-WAN) specialists VeloCloud. This enables MetTel to provide more trusted bandwidth to its customers, and a more flexible service – by offering different transport mechanisms, configured on the fly.
Moving forward, using VeloCloud's SD-WAN with the VMware Airwatch mobile device management solution, which MetTel is now deploying, an enterprise customer will be able see what is happening on each device, right down to the individual app. Like MetTel, with more virtualisation and SDN on the horizon, CSPs are moving away from legacy models towards becoming solution providers.
