Stuart Carlaw, Chief Research Officer, ABI Research
There are two schools of thought on WiFi, says Stuart Carlaw. The first, still valid, is the mobile network offload business case, where traffic is taken from the mobile network and put on a low cost spectrum resource (WIFi). The second approach is to use WiFi to provide coverage for building and facility owners and then to layer in services. On the ground carriers are approaching the area in different ways.
What is the expected outcome? Stuart thinks we could see the convergence of carrier WiFi and small cells via a single control function. Then dynamic services could soon be offered across both unlicensed and licensed spectrum to get the best of both worlds.
